Surrealistic Pillow

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Surrealistic Pillow · At the beginning of 1967 the line-up of Jefferson Airplane had just been renewed: the singer Grace Slick joined the band in October 1966, together with the drummer Spencer Dryden. Two weeks later they began their second album at RCA Victor's studio in Hollywood, under the direction of the producer Rick Jarrard. RCA wanted a commercial result, so long psychedelic jams were left out.

The sound has a folk-rock base with psychedelic colours. Slick brought Somebody to Love and White Rabbit with her from her time with The Great Society. White Rabbit became her signature song and is regarded as one of the first openly pro-drug rock songs. Somebody to Love was given a punchier arrangement, and Today is a delicate ballad that was often played on the radio. Somebody to Love and White Rabbit became top-ten hits in the United States and the record is regarded as one of the most important works of early psychedelic rock.

Listening

Listening tip. In White Rabbit, listen to the voice of Grace Slick and to how the track, from a quiet start, builds more and more tension.
