After Bathing at Baxter’s

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After Bathing at Baxter’s · After Bathing at Baxter's is the third album by Jefferson Airplane, released on 27 November 1967 by RCA Victor. The band had just come out of the success of Surrealistic Pillow and the single Somebody to Love. After hearing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, they rejected earlier recordings and opted for more experiment. The recording took five months and cost ten times as much as that of the previous record.

The sound is heavier than on its predecessor, with more fuzz and feedback in Jorma Kaukonen's guitar playing. Rejoyce is jazz-like and refers to Ulysses by James Joyce. Spare Chaynge was cut from a 24-minute recording. Commercially the record was a disappointment: it got no further than number 17 on the Billboard chart. Jann Wenner wrote in Rolling Stone that it was probably the best rock album an American group had made up to that point.
