Positivity

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Positivity was released in 1993 and is the album by the British band Incognito, who supported the record with a tour of North America. Bandleader Jean-Paul Maunick, nicknamed Bluey, produced it himself. He drew his inspiration mainly from Talking Book and Innervisions by Stevie Wonder. You can hear this in the funk grooves, the tight horn section and the smooth, jazzy arrangements, in which the singers Maysa Leak and Mark Anthoni are given plenty of room. There is more singing than on the two earlier albums.

The reviews were positive. The Washington Post praised the imagination and the power of the horns, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution counted the record among the best R&B albums of 1994. AllMusic called the mix of bebop, soul, classical and dance exemplary. MusicHound R&B called Deep Waters an important acid jazz track.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Deep Waters and notice how groove, vocals and horns together build a warm, jazzy atmosphere that is also very danceable.
