100° and Rising

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

100° and Rising was released in 1995 on Talkin' Loud Records and is the fifth album by the British acid jazz band Incognito. Bandleader Jean-Paul Bluey Maunick produced it himself and plays guitar on almost all the tracks. Gilles Peterson handled the A&R. Many guests worked on the record, such as horn players, strings under the direction of Simon Hale and several singers, including Joy Malcolm and Pamela Y. Anderson.

The band mixes jazz, soul and funk. Two singles were released, I Hear Your Name and Everyday, and Everyday reached the British chart. AllMusic called the band smooth, capable and profound: there is little new compared with earlier records, but the group finds new variations on its own sound. Rolling Stone praised the carefully constructed melodies and Maunick's sensual production.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Everyday and notice how vocals, horns and rhythm section together create a smooth groove.
