Death Certificate

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Death Certificate is Ice Cube's second studio album and was released on 29 October 1991 on Priority Records. He wrote and recorded it from late 1990, while also contributing to records by Yo-Yo and Del tha Funkee Homosapien and making his film debut in Boyz n the Hood. The producers were Sir Jinx, DJ Pooh and Cube himself. The sound is more West Coast than on its predecessor, with plenty of 1970s funk and soul.

The album is divided into two halves, The Death Side and The Life Side. The first describes violence and drugs, the second looks ahead. With True to the Game and above all No Vaseline, Cube responds to his former group N.W.A. Black Korea caused a great deal of controversy, and in Great Britain this track and No Vaseline were at first removed from the record. Critics were full of praise, and The Source later gave the album its highest rating.
