AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted · After a bitter break with N.W.A and Ruthless Records, Ice Cube immediately began work on a solo record. He wanted Dr. Dre as producer, but that did not happen. He therefore worked with Sir Jinx, and then in New York with Public Enemy's production team, the Bomb Squad. He came into the studio with notebooks full of rhymes. The album was released on 16 May 1990 on Priority Records.

The lyrics are about life in the ghettos of Los Angeles: drugs, racism and poverty. The title song parodies the television programme America's Most Wanted, and on Endangered Species (Tales From the Darkside) Chuck D raps along. In It's a Man's World, Cube engages in a war of words with Yo-Yo. Critical opinion was divided: some found the lyrics repellent, others praised the sharp tone. Later, many critics saw the album as a hip hop classic that influenced many rappers.
