The Predator

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Predator is Ice Cube's third studio album and was released on 17 November 1992. It came out a few months after the Los Angeles riots of that year, and many tracks are about the tensions between black and white in the United States. In We Had to Tear This Mothafucka Up he addresses the officers who walked free in the Rodney King case, and Who Got the Camera? shows how a black man is beaten by the police. The title refers in part to the film Predator 2, from which the album uses samples.

The singles were It Was a Good Day, Check Yo Self and Wicked. Now I Gotta Wet'cha gave rise to the expression It's on like Donkey Kong. The album received good reviews and, on release, stood at number one on the Billboard 200.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to It Was a Good Day and notice how the lyrics describe an ordinary day, on an album full of heavier themes.
