Wake of the Flood
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Wake of the Flood was released on 15 October 1973 as the first album on the Grateful Dead's own label. It was their first studio record in almost three years and the first without Ron McKernan, nicknamed Pigpen, who had died shortly before. New were the keyboard player Keith Godchaux and his wife Donna Jean, a singer. His preference for bebop and modal jazz gave the music a different direction from Pigpen's blues.
The band recorded the album between 4 and 15 August 1973 at the Record Plant in Sausalito. The songs had been tried out live for months. They mix country, folk, R&B, ragtime and jazz rock. Row Jimmy has a slow tempo with a light reggae groove, and Weather Report Suite by Bob Weir is the grand finale. The title comes from the first lines of Here Comes Sunshine. The album climbed higher in the pop charts than American Beauty: number 18.
