From the Mars Hotel

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

From the Mars Hotel was recorded mainly in April 1974 and was released on 27 June of that year, less than a year after Wake of the Flood. It was the second record on the Grateful Dead's own label and the last before a long break from touring. The band chose Coast Recorders in San Francisco and produced it themselves, with the engineer Roy Segal. Jerry Garcia found the room sounded livelier than the Record Plant.

Most of the songs came from Garcia and the lyricist Robert Hunter. Phil Lesh sang Unbroken Chain and Pride of Cucamonga, his last lead vocals for the band until 1985. Scarlet Begonias had appeared only a month earlier and later became a highlight of the concerts. U.S. Blues came out as a single. The sleeve shows a real building in San Francisco in an extraterrestrial landscape. Christgau called the album more cheerful than its predecessor, with almost as many memorable melodies as American Beauty.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Unbroken Chain and notice Ned Lagin's synthesizer and Phil Lesh, who takes the lead vocal himself.
