Tales of Another
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Tales of Another is an album by the bassist Gary Peacock, recorded on 2 February 1977 and released later that year on ECM. The trio with the pianist Keith Jarrett and the drummer Jack DeJohnette was the first recording by the group that later became known as Jarrett's Standards Trio. DeJohnette related that Peacock had asked the two of them for his recording session and that the producer Manfred Eicher then suggested to Jarrett that they form a trio. They decided to play standards as a springboard. They did not come together again until January 1983, for the sessions of Standards, Vol. 1, Standards, Vol. 2 and Changes.
All the pieces are by the bassist himself. He was relieved that he did not have to explain anything to the others: musically, they understood immediately what he meant. Critics praised the close interplay. The biographer Ian Carr called the record one of the classic albums of the 1970s.
