December Poems

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

December Poems is a solo album by the American jazz bassist Gary Peacock. He recorded it in December 1977 and it was released in 1979 on the ECM label. The Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek plays on two duets, on tenor and soprano saxophone. All six pieces are by the bassist himself, from Snow Dance to Celebrations. Many titles suggest winter, such as Winterlude and A Northern Tale.

The reception was positive. AllMusic wrote that the album has a sparse and somewhat cold atmosphere, but that the bassist's virtuosity and beautiful tone come into their own in a solo setting. The DownBeat reviewer Art Lange called the record a gem.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Winterlude, one of the two pieces on which Jan Garbarek plays, and notice how the saxophone relates to the bass.
