Goin’ Up
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Goin’ Up · Goin' Up was released in 1961 on Blue Note. Freddie Hubbard plays on it with Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums. It is a quintet in the classic hard bop line-up of the day.
The six pieces come from various composers. Kenny Dorham wrote Asiatic Rates and Karioka, Mobley The Changing Scene and A Peck a Sec, and the trumpeter himself Blues for Brenda. I Wished I Knew is by Bill Smith. Scott Yanow of AllMusic praised his excellent solos. It is a record that is above all about the interplay and the solos of this group of five.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Blues for Brenda, the trumpeter's own piece, and notice his trumpet solo.
