Open Sesame

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Open Sesame was the debut of the then 22-year-old trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. He recorded it on 19 June 1960 in Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, for the Blue Note label. Playing with him were Tina Brooks on tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums. Brooks wrote the title song and Gypsy Blue.

The repertoire combines original work with standards such as But Beautiful and All or Nothing at All. A reviewer at DownBeat praised the youthful vigour and fierceness of the debutant and saw in it a good sign for the small jazz combo. The Penguin Guide to Jazz included the record in its Core Collection and called it a great Blue Note set.
