Hub Cap
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hub Cap was released in 1961 on Blue Note. Freddie Hubbard plays here with the trombonist Julian Priester, the tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, the pianist Cedar Walton, the bassist Larry Ridley and the drummer Philly Joe Jones. The title refers to his nickname.
The album contains two pieces by others: Cry Me Not, written by Randy Weston for this session and arranged by Melba Liston, and Plexus by Walton. The trumpeter called Cry Me Not the most interesting piece on the record. He dedicates Luana to his cousin, and Earmon Jr. is named after his brother, a pianist. The British critic John Fordham wrote in The Guardian in 2003 that the music throws you back to a time when the muscular dynamics of hard bop were still commercially popular. Fordham praised the opening solo on the title track and the warmth of Cry Me Not.
