There Is Nothing Left to Lose

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

There Is Nothing Left to Lose · After the difficult recording of The Colour and the Shape, Foo Fighters lost two band members. Dave Grohl fired guitarist Franz Stahl and turned the group into a trio with bassist Nate Mendel and drummer Taylor Hawkins. He bought a house in Alexandria, Virginia, and built Studio 606 in the basement, with no record company looking over his shoulder. Together with producer Adam Kasper the band recorded the album there, without computer programs such as Pro Tools. It was released on 2 November 1999.

The sound is softer and more melodic than before. Grohl called it his favourite album by the band. Learn to Fly became the first single. According to Allmusic, the group sounds for the first time like one tight band, which also rocks hard. In 2001 the album received the Grammy for Best Rock Album, the band's first Grammy.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Aurora and notice the drumming: Taylor Hawkins plays the more jazzy parts here, by his own account.
