One By One
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
One By One · The recording of One by One got off to a difficult start. After a hard time in which drummer Taylor Hawkins overdosed, the band recorded ten tracks in Virginia and later in Los Angeles, for more than a million dollars. Nobody was satisfied. The music sounded too clean and too tame, and quarrels broke out. In April 2002 the band threw everything away. After that Dave Grohl rescued the project in two weeks in his own studio, with Nick Raskulinecz as producer. Only Tired of You remained from the first sessions, with a guest appearance by Brian May.
The album was released on 22 October 2002 and sounds harder and more direct than the earlier records. Grohl wanted to capture the energy of the live shows. It was the first record with guitarist Chris Shiflett. The singles All My Life and Times Like These did well. The album won the Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2004.
