You’re Dead!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

You’re Dead! · Steven Ellison, known as Flying Lotus, came up with the idea for this album with bassist Thundercat when they were listening to George Duke in the car and decided they should now make something like it themselves. He wanted to make the fastest, hardest and most intense jazz record and recorded it at his home in Los Angeles, with Ableton Live and real instruments. The album was released on 6 October 2014 on Warp Records. Thundercat plays bass on nearly every track, and guests include Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Kamasi Washington and Herbie Hancock.

It is a concept album about death and the afterlife, mainly instrumental, with jazz fusion, electronica and hip hop. Ellison says the message is not that it is over, but that the spirits live on. Never Catch Me was released as a single. The critical response was very positive.
