Mighty Like a Rose

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Mighty Like a Rose is saxophonist Eddie Harris's second album. He recorded it in 1961 for the label Vee-Jay. He plays tenor saxophone in a quintet with Willie Pickens on piano, Joe Diorio on guitar, Bill Yancey on bass and Harold Jones on drums.

The repertoire consists of standards such as My Buddy and Willow Weep for Me, the film theme Spartacus by Alex North and God Bless the Child by Billie Holiday. There is also a piece by John Lewis and two original numbers by Harris. His playing seeks a balance between cool bop and outright soul-jazz. You can already hear something of the influence of Yusef Lateef, a musician from Detroit. According to AllMusic everything is well executed and Harris beautifully commands the highest registers of his instrument. That makes the album worthwhile for anyone who liked Exodus to Jazz.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to God Bless the Child and notice how Harris makes the melody sing on his saxophone.
