Jazz for "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Jazz for "Breakfast at Tiffany's" · This third album by Eddie Harris, from 1961, was released on Vee-Jay. It is a jazz adaptation of the music Henry Mancini wrote for the film Breakfast at Tiffany's. Harris plays tenor sax, accompanied by trombone, vibraphone, piano, guitar, bass and drums.

The record follows the film music, from Moon River to The Big Heist, and keeps Mancini's melodies. AllMusic observes that Harris has many fresh ideas but never strays far from the melody. In this way a film score is turned into short jazz numbers in which the saxophone takes the leading role. Many tracks last only two or three minutes; only Moon River and the title song run to about five minutes.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Moon River to how Harris keeps Mancini's melody recognisable and yet gives it a colour of his own.
