Exodus to Jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Exodus to Jazz · Eddie Harris recorded his debut album in 1961 for the label Vee-Jay. He plays tenor sax in a quintet with, among others, pianist Willie Pickens and guitarist Joe Diorio. He wrote four of the eight tracks himself.

The title refers to Exodus, Ernest Gold's film music, which Harris brings into a new jazz form. AllMusic calls the record full of concise, smoothly swinging tracks. His tone is cool and close to Stan Getz, with here and there a touch of soul jazz. This made the record a forerunner of much crossover success in the 1960s, although it is still far from his later, funkier work.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Exodus to how Harris plays the familiar film melody in a jazz form of his own, with a cool tone on the tenor sax.
