Exodus

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Exodus · On 3 December 1976 an attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in Jamaica. He survived, played the Smile Jamaica concert two days later all the same, and then left for London. There the group recorded this album. The title was already settled before the title song existed. He wrote it in answer to the election slogan of Prime Minister Michael Manley, and it became a number one in Jamaica.

The sound is relaxed, with pulsing bass, piano and guitar, and in the title song also trumpets. The lyrics are more direct than on earlier records and deal with change, religious politics and love. The first half opens with Natural Mystic, while the second half revolves around love and staying faithful. Jamming, Waiting in Vain, One Love and Three Little Birds became major international hits. The record brought the singer international fame, and Time named it the best album of the twentieth century in 1999.
