Cool Sax Warm Heart

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Cool Sax Warm Heart · Saxophonist Eddie Harris recorded this album in 1964 for Columbia. Tom Wilson was the producer. Harris plays tenor saxophone, with Wynton Kelly on piano on four tracks, Warren Stephens on guitar, Melvin Jackson on bass and Bucky Taylor on drums. The Malcom Dodds Singers sing along, and a few other musicians whose names are not known also play.

The programme combines Harris's own pieces, such as Chicago Serenade and Brother Ed, with standards by Gershwin and Buddy Johnson and a number by Django Reinhardt. At just over seven minutes, Brother Ed is the longest track. The reception was mixed. AllMusic called the record pleasant at some moments but found it largely run-of-the-mill and advised listening to his work for Atlantic instead. As a result the album is overshadowed by the records for which Harris became best known.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Brother Ed, the longest track, and notice how Harris lets his tenor saxophone breathe during the solo.
