Alex North

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Alex North studied at Juilliard and in Moscow and first wrote music for theatre and dance. Elia Kazan took him to Hollywood for A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). That was one of the first Hollywood scores to lean heavily on jazz and blues. The music follows the psyche of the characters instead of the action. Later North wrote big, modern epics such as Spartacus (1960) and Cleopatra (1963), with sharp dissonances and unusual instruments. For 2001: A Space Odyssey he wrote a score that Stanley Kubrick did not use. North was nominated fifteen times for an Oscar and received an honorary Oscar in 1986.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the bluesy clarinet and saxophone in Streetcar and the hard, modern harmonies in Spartacus.
