Alex North

Alex North studeerde aan Juilliard en in Moskou en schreef eerst muziek voor theater en dans. Elia Kazan nam hem mee naar Hollywood voor A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). Dat was een van de eerste Hollywoodscores die sterk op jazz en blues leunden. De muziek volgt de psyche van de personages in plaats van de actie. Later schreef North grote, moderne epossen als Spartacus (1960) en Cleopatra (1963), met scherpe dissonanten en ongewone instrumenten. Voor 2001: A Space Odyssey schreef hij een score die Stanley Kubrick niet gebruikte. North werd vijftien keer genomineerd voor een Oscar en kreeg in 1986 een ere-Oscar.
