Youthquake

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Youthquake is the second studio album by the English pop band Dead or Alive and was released on 13 May 1985 on Epic Records. It was the first time the band worked with the production team Stock Aitken Waterman. The recording sessions were tense: there were clashes between band and producers, and according to the engineer Phil Harding it almost came to blows.

The sound consists of tight sequencers, drum machines and synthesizers, with Pete Burns's dramatic vocals on top. The album broke through in Europe and the United States thanks to You Spin Me Round (Like a Record), which reached number 1 in England. Lover Come Back to Me, In Too Deep and My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me to the Doctor) were also released as singles. The reception was mixed. Smash Hits praised the danceable songs but found the production too cold, while Rolling Stone was negative.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) and notice the drum machine and the sequencers: how do they hold the tempo tight beneath Pete Burns's vocals?
