Sophisticated Boom Boom

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Sophisticated Boom Boom is the debut album of the English group Dead or Alive, released on 20 April 1984 by Epic Records. Zeus B. Held produced it, and Pete Burns sang. The title comes from a song by the Shangri-Las, and the cover, photographed by Peter Ashworth, was inspired by Lionheart by Kate Bush. The working title Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know was rejected by the label.

The music is mostly synth-pop with danceable elements. The album contains the band's first British top forty single, a cover of That's the Way (I Like It) by KC and the Sunshine Band. That song and Misty Circles did well on the American dance chart. In the United Kingdom the album reached number 29. The cassette version had three extra songs.

Listening tip. Listen to That's the Way (I Like It) and notice how a disco classic acquires a new atmosphere through synthesizers and danceable rhythms.
