Human After All
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Human After All · After the carefully constructed Discovery, Daft Punk wanted to do exactly the opposite. From September to November 2004 the duo made this album in six weeks, less than two of which were spent recording. Where Discovery was full of samples, there is only one sample here. The basis consisted of two guitars, two drum machines, a vocoder and an eight-track recorder. Thomas Bangalter spoke of an unpolished stone, and said the album was about fear and paranoia.
The songs are repetitive and minimalist, with heavy guitars and electronics. Robot Rock uses a melody from Release the Beast by Breakwater, and Technologic has a monotone voice reeling off commands. Make Love, by contrast, is calm neo-soul. Critics were mostly negative on release, but some appreciated the dark, experimental tone. After the acclaimed Alive 2006/2007 tour, many fans and critics took a different view of the album.
