Homework
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Homework · Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo had made two popular singles on the Scottish label Soma when an offer from Virgin followed in 1996. At first they only wanted to release individual singles, but after five months of work they had enough tracks for an album. They recorded it at home, in their own studio in Paris, quickly and cheaply. That is where the title comes from. They thought freedom important, so they paid for everything themselves and remained the owners of their masters.
Homework opens with Daftendirekt, part of a live performance in Ghent, Belgium. Da Funk blends funk and acid, Around the World revolves around a disco-style bass line and a persistent hook. Both reached number 1 on the American dance club chart. The record reached the top ten in England, sold more than two million copies and drew worldwide attention to French house.
