New Trombone

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

With New Trombone, trombonist Curtis Fuller made his debut as a leader in 1957. He was only 22 years old at the time. The album was released on Prestige Records. He plays in a quintet with alto saxophonist Sonny Red, pianist Hank Jones, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Louis Hayes.

The material consists of original compositions, such as Vonce #5, Transportation Blues and Blue Lawson, and two standards: Namely You by Gene de Paul and Johnny Mercer and What Is This Thing Called Love? by Cole Porter. On the CD, Alicia is a bonus track. Reviewer Scott Yanow of AllMusic called it a strong start to the young trombonist's career and thought all the musicians did well.

Listening
