The Opener

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Opener is trombonist Curtis Fuller's debut on Blue Note. He recorded it on 16 June 1957 and the label released it that same year. Fuller plays in a quintet with Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Bobby Timmons on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Mobley does not play on A Lovely Way to Spend an Evening and Here's to My Lady.

There are six tracks. Fuller himself wrote Hugore and Lizzy's Bounce, Oscalypso is by Oscar Pettiford, and in addition the quintet plays standards by, among others, Gershwin. AllMusic found the record an extremely impressive whole.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hugore, an original by Fuller, and notice the sound of the trombone alongside the tenor saxophone.
