Eat to the Beat

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Eat to the Beat was released on 28 September 1979 on Chrysalis, as Blondie's fourth album. It followed Parallel Lines, with which the group had already moved towards rock-tinged pop. Mike Chapman produced. He later wrote that the group wanted to try everything, that there was a lot of arguing in the studio and that drugs became a problem.

The album continues the pop course, with excursions into rock, disco, punk, reggae and funk, and even a lullaby. Atomic and The Hardest Part blend disco with rock. Dreaming, Union City Blue and Atomic were released as singles in Great Britain. The album was also released as one of the first video albums, with short films by David Mallet. Critics were divided: some saw a second-rate rehash of Parallel Lines, others found it fresh and varied. In the United Kingdom the record reached number one.
