Autoamerican

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Autoamerican was released in November 1980 and was Blondie's fifth album. The group recorded in Los Angeles, at the insistence of producer Mike Chapman, while the sleeve was made in New York. It was a clear change of course. The opener Europa is a dramatic instrumental overture with orchestra, over which Debbie Harry speaks a lyric about car culture.

The group explored many styles. Here's Looking at You and Faces sound like jazz and blues. The Tide Is High is a cover of a Jamaican rocksteady song by the Paragons from 1967. Rapture combines funk, rock, jazz and the new rap, and became the first rap song to reach number one in the United States. Follow Me is a cover from the musical Camelot. According to drummer Clem Burke, the record label heard no hit, yet the album produced two number ones. The intended title was Coca Cola, but the company rejected the idea.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Rapture and notice how funk, rock and rap come together in a single song.
