Parallel Lines
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Parallel Lines · After their second album Plastic Letters, Blondie switched from producer Richard Gottehrer to the Australian Mike Chapman. In June 1978 the band recorded their third album at the Record Plant in New York. The atmosphere in the studio was tense. Chapman rehearsed a great deal with the band members and carefully guided Debbie Harry in particular through her vocals. Many songs were not yet finished when recording began. The lyrics of Sunday Girl and One Way or Another, among others, only took shape during the sessions. The album was finished in six weeks, whereas the record company had allowed six months.
The record is pop, not punk. Chapman himself said he was making a pop album. Heart of Glass is the only disco piece, with nervous keyboards. The album reached number one in the United Kingdom and marked the breakthrough in the United States, where Heart of Glass became their first number one.
