Vespertine

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Vespertine is Björk's fourth studio album, released in August 2001. After the loud Homogenic she wanted to make a record of small, intricate electronic music with a domestic feel. The first working title was Domestika. She began it while shooting the film Dancer in the Dark, and her new relationship with Matthew Barney made the lyrics more intimate. Producers included Opiate, Console and the duo Matmos, and the harpist Zeena Parkins contributed.

The arrangements use delicate instruments such as harp, celesta, clavichord, strings and specially made music boxes. Together with Matmos she made microbeats from everyday sounds, such as the shuffling of cards and the cracking of ice. Three singles were released from Vespertine: Hidden Place, Pagan Poetry and Cocoon. The videos for the last two were rejected by MTV. Critics were unanimous in their praise and called the record erotic, intimate and experimental. It appeared on many lists of the best albums of 2001 and of the decade.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cocoon and notice how soft and close everything sounds, as if the music were being made in a room around you.
