Selmasongs
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Selmasongs · In 2000 the soundtrack of the film Dancer in the Dark was released, in which Björk played the lead role. She had first been asked only to write the music, but director Lars von Trier persuaded her to play Selma as well, a Czech immigrant who is slowly going blind and works in a factory. She made the music partly with sounds she recorded on the film set, such as factory machines and trains.
That yields a mixture of classical arrangements, techno rhythms and musical melodies. Cvalda begins with industrial sounds that turn into a shuffling rhythm. I've Seen It All rests on a rhythmic loop of train sounds, and Thom Yorke sings the part of Peter Stormare from the film there. That song received an Oscar nomination. Some lyrics were adapted for the album, and a few songs from the film are missing. Reviews were mostly favourable.
