Homogenic

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Homogenic · After a long tour for Post, Björk returned to her home in London, needing to write new songs as a form of therapy. A media circus around her stalker disrupted the sessions, and she withdrew to Spain, to the studio of her drummer Trevor Morais in Málaga. There she recorded most of the album, with Mark Bell, Guy Sigsworth, Howie B and Markus Dravs, among others, as producers.

Homogenic is a tribute to Iceland. Electronic beats form the rhythm, the heartbeat-like part, and the Icelandic String Octet provides the strings. Producer Dravs described the desired sound as raw volcanoes with soft moss over them. Her singing ranges from screaming to the singing and speaking style of Icelandic choirmen, as in Unravel. The album received broad praise and has since appeared on many lists of the best records of all time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Unravel. Notice how her voice moves between speaking and singing, and how little is happening beneath the vocals.
