Medúlla

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Medúlla is Björk's fifth studio album and was released in August 2004. After the electronic Vespertine she wanted to make a record consisting almost entirely of human voices. She had had that desire since her teenage years. The title comes from the Latin word for marrow. She began in 2002, still under the working title The Lake Album. She added her own drums to demos while eight months pregnant and then switched the instruments off, because she liked the result.

Guest singers included the Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq, Robert Wyatt and Mike Patton of Faith No More. Choirs from London and Iceland also took part. Beatboxers such as Rahzel and Dokaka provide the rhythms. Two singles were released from the record, Who Is It and Triumph of a Heart. She sang Oceania at the opening of the 2004 Olympic Games. Critical reception was full of praise, although some found the album confusing. It received two Grammy nominations.

Listening tip. Listen to Who Is It and try to hear which sounds and rhythms come from human voices.
