Oceania
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Oceania was released on 19 June 2012 via Martha's Music. The record belongs to Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, the large project in which the group put out individual songs for free on the internet for years. Billy Corgan now wanted to make an album, as an album within the album, because releasing one song at a time had, in his view, run its course. He produced it together with Bjorn Thorsrud. It was the first record with guitarist Jeff Schroeder and the only one with bassist Nicole Fiorentino and drummer Mike Byrne.
The lyrics deal with alienation in love and in modern culture. The songs The Celestials and Panopticon were released as singles. Schroeder wanted it to sound somewhat more spacious and dreamy than earlier records. Most critics reacted positively and called it Corgan's best record in a long time. The album entered at number four on the Billboard 200.
