MACHINA/the machines of God
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
MACHINA/the machines of God · After the tour for Adore, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin returned to the group. The band members decided that there would be one more album and one more tour before they stopped for good. Billy Corgan devised a concept album about a rock star, Zero, who hears the voice of God and calls himself Glass. The group recorded in Chicago, with Flood as co-producer. When bassist D'Arcy Wretzky left, Corgan and James Iha took over the bass.
Machina/The Machines of God was released on 29 February 2000 on Virgin. The album built on the electronic side of Adore, but also let hard guitars be heard again. The concept remained largely unfinished, and the lyrics are mostly about the end of the group and about survival. The reception was generally favourable. The sequel, Machina II, was released by the group themselves and given away to fans over the internet.
