Adore
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Adore followed Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and the long world tour afterwards. Recording was difficult. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin had left, Billy Corgan was going through a divorce and his mother died. He later called the record the work of a band falling apart. Recording began in 1997, first in Chicago with producer Brad Wood and then in Los Angeles, where Corgan mostly took charge himself. Without a permanent drummer the band used a drum machine.
The album sounds much calmer than earlier work. Synthesizers, programming, acoustic guitar and piano take the place of heavy guitars. At least five songs revolve mainly around piano, and For Martha is a tribute to Corgan's mother, largely recorded in a live take. Fans were divided and it sold less than its predecessors. Critics, however, were positive about the darker course, and Adore grew into a cult album.
