Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness · After the long tour for Siamese Dream, Billy Corgan started writing straight away. The band wanted to make a double album, partly inspired by the Beatles' White Album, and approached it as if it might be their last. Producer Butch Vig was replaced by Flood and Alan Moulder. In April 1995 the group started in a rehearsal room, where much of the rhythm work was recorded. Guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretzky played a bigger role than before. So many songs came about that dozens of finished pieces had to be left off the album.

The album was released on 23 October 1995 on Virgin Records, with 28 tracks on two CDs. It blends art rock, grunge, alternative rock and heavy metal. It entered at number one on the American chart. Singles included Bullet with Butterfly Wings, 1979 and Tonight, Tonight. Critics praised the ambition and the album is regarded as one of the best of the 1990s.

Listening tip. Listen to Bullet with Butterfly Wings, the first single, and notice how broad the album's style already sounds here. Then compare it with another song from the record.
