B’Day
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
B’Day · Beyoncé's second solo album was actually planned for before 2004, but was shelved because of Destiny's Child's last record and the film Dreamgirls. Only after filming did she go into the studio. In April 2006 she hired Sony Music Studios in New York and had several producers work at the same time in separate rooms, including Rodney Jerkins, The Neptunes, Stargate and Swizz Beatz. She walked from room to room, and the album was recorded in about two weeks.
The role in Dreamgirls inspired many of the lyrics. Musically the record ranges from 1970s and 1980s funk to ballads and hip hop, pop and R&B, and real instruments can be heard on most tracks. Déjà Vu was the first single, and Irreplaceable became a number one in the United States. Reviews were mostly favourable, especially about the sound and the vocals. The album won a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album.
