Drukqs

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Drukqs was released on 22 October 2001 on Warp Records and is a double album by Aphex Twin. He released it after leaving an MP3 player containing 180 unpublished tracks behind on an aeroplane. To get ahead of a leak he made an album of it himself, also because it was to be his last release for Warp. Many titles are in Cornish or in code. According to him, the title is an invented word.

The record shifts in style: fast programmed rhythms from jungle and drum and bass, ambient, electro-acoustic pieces and piano music, played on computer-controlled instruments such as a modified Yamaha Disklavier. Critics heard prepared piano in the line of John Cage and piano pieces reminiscent of Erik Satie. The album was one of his most controversial: some found it not very innovative, others praised it as a skilful work. Avril 14th is one of his best-known recordings.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Avril 14th, one of his best-known recordings, and notice how different a piano piece sounds from the fast rhythms elsewhere on this record.
