Richard D. James Album

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Richard D. James Album · In 1995, under the name AFX, Richard D. James had already experimented with fast, exaggerated rhythms on the Hangable Auto Bulb EPs, inspired by drum and bass and by his friend Luke Vibert. The 1996 album, released by Warp Records, he made largely on his Macintosh, and it took more time than his earlier records. His method for the drums: he tapped out the rhythm on the keyboard and then spent four hours shifting the notes into the right place.

The record sets lightning-fast breakbeats against lovely strings and ambient melodies. For the strings he bought a violin at a flea market and sampled individual notes. In To Cure a Weakling Child, his voice, distorted by the computer, sounds like a child giving a lecture. Critical reception was glowing, especially about the production. It became Warp's best-selling release to that point, and is counted among the best albums of the 1990s.

Listening tip. Listen to To Cure a Weakling Child. Notice the distorted, childlike voice and how it moves against the complicated rhythms.
