Erik Satie
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Erik Satie earned his living as a pianist in the cabarets of Montmartre and later lived in a sparse little room in Arcueil. Against the heavy music of Wagner he set short, bare pieces with strange titles and mocking performance directions. His three Gymnopédies of 1888 repeat a calm accompaniment above which a simple melody floats. Debussy orchestrated two of them, and later Cage and the minimalists saw him as a forerunner.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to the first Gymnopédie and hear how the left hand keeps repeating the same two rocking chords, while the melody floats slowly over them.
