Songs in A Minor

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Songs in A Minor · Alicia Keys began writing songs for this album at the age of fourteen. In 1996 she signed with Columbia, but the label wanted to mould her into the next teen pop star and brought in well-known producers. She therefore began recording on her own initiative in 1998, first in her bedroom in Harlem and later in the basement of a house in Queens, together with Kerry Brothers. Columbia rejected the recordings. Clive Davis bought out her contract, and the album finally came out on J Records in 2001. Despite the title, only two songs are in A minor.

The classically trained pianist wrote, arranged and produced most of it herself. The result is neo-soul with classical music, R&B, soul and jazz. Fallin' became a worldwide hit and A Woman's Worth reached the American top ten. Critics praised the singer's maturity, and the album won five Grammys, including Best R&B Album.
