Girl on Fire
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
After The Element of Freedom in 2009, Alicia Keys went through three eventful years: she married producer Swizz Beatz, became a mother and took more of her own career into her own hands. Girl on Fire was released in November 2012 and was her first album on RCA, after her previous label J Records had been absorbed into the group. Work took place in studios in New York, Los Angeles, Jamaica and London, with, among others, Swizz Beatz, Babyface and Jeff Bhasker.
She above all wanted to write a good song rather than chase a fashionable beat. The result is a restrained R&B record full of piano songs, with excursions into electro, rock, reggae and hip hop. She wrote Brand New Me together with Emeli Sandé, and on Fire We Make the blues-rock guitarist Gary Clark Jr. plays. Reviews were largely positive, and the album won a Grammy for Best R&B Album.
