Roland TB-303

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Roland TB-303 · The TB-303 Bass Line was meant for guitarists who only practised and missed a bass player. The little box has one oscillator, a filter and a sequencer in which you program a bass line note by note, with accents and gliding notes. It did not sound like a bass guitar and flopped; in 1984 it went out of production. In Chicago, producers discovered that you could turn the knobs for cutoff and resonance while playing. The same bass line then squeals, squelches and wails. That sound was given the name acid.

Listening

Listening tip. The notes stay almost the same, but the sound keeps changing: can you hear the filter opening and closing?
