Classic blues

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

In the 1920s the best-selling blues records were by women. Classic blues is urban blues, sung by female singers from the theatre and the tent shows, with a band of piano, horns and sometimes a banjo. Bessie Smith, the Empress of the Blues, recorded Downhearted Blues in 1923.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the AAB form of the lyrics and how the singer, not the guitarist, is the centre of the recording.
