The Vines
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The Vines are an Australian rock band from Sydney, formed in 1994. Craig Nicholls met the bassist Patrick Matthews at a McDonald's in a suburb of the city. Together with the drummer David Olliffe they first played under the name Rishikesh, after the Indian town where the Beatles visited an ashram in 1968. When newspapers kept misspelling that name, Nicholls chose The Vines, as a tribute to his father, who was in a local band. Nicholls became the main songwriter and was the only constant in all the line-ups.
Music and breakthrough
The debut album Highly Evolved came out in 2002, recorded with the producer Rob Schnapf in Los Angeles. The album reached number eleven in the United States and went platinum in Australia. Get Free earned the group an ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist and was ranked highly by NME. That year they appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone and NME, and they were grouped with a wave of bands with The in their name, such as The Strokes, The Hives and The White Stripes. Winning Days in 2004, Vision Valley in 2006, Melodia in 2008, Future Primitive in 2011, Wicked Nature in 2014 and In Miracle Land in 2016 followed.
Influence
The sound is described as a mixture of 1960s garage rock and 1990s alternative rock. Vision Valley consists of short, direct songs and barely lasts thirty minutes. The band was part of the return of guitar rock in the early 2000s.
